Our Hard Lesson and What We Learned from it

Hi, it’s Kay.  As far back as 2005, clients in my medspa would tell me, “I wish you had a gym here.  Then I  could get my treatments and work out in the same place.”  No exaggeration - nearly every client told me this.

I believed them.

Shannon’s clients told her the same thing.

She believed them.

So...in 2015, when Shannon and I teamed up to create our medspa based on body contouring, what was on the must do list?  You guessed it - a gym!  We selected a space large enough to hold a gym, contracted with personal trainers and yoga instructors, and outiffted it with gym equipment.

Out of hundreds of clients, how many signed up to work out with the trainer or for yoga sessions?  One, and one.  Seriously, it’s the truth.

When we told our clients that we had a gym, nearly every client reacted enthusiastically,  but each had excuses why they could not participate.  These were the same clients who were willingly spending thousands of dollars on body contouring treatments.

After eight to nine months of no interest from our clients, we ditched the project and converted the gym area into more treatment rooms.

Lesson Learned

With body contouring services, most clients tell you what they perceive as the right thing to say, i.e. they want to work out, but they may not follow through. It's the truth we found consistent over twenty-five plus years of practice.

Does it make being a provider of body contouring services harder?

Not really.  These days, we can get clients the results they want even without diet and exercise... though diet and exercise most certainly supercharges their results.

How do you handle it in practice?

Continue to educate but assume the treatments you provide your client do the work and get the results without client assistance; that’s why your client will pay you top dollar for the treatments.

Choose your treatments wisely and listen only to experienced experts when selecting your treatments and knowing what to tell your clients to expect for results.

What clients really want is a ‘Quick Fix.’
