How to get rid of bat wings with non-invasive technology – in the spa or at home

Bat wings, flabby, saggy, jiggly arms…you know the names. Upper arms cause immense distress for women at midlife and menopause. It’s not due to a bad lifestyle. It’s due to biological factors that cause (1) a shift in the body’s natural fat distribution, (2) a loss of skin elasticity, and (3) either fat gain or fat loss in the upper arms (as determined by genetics). Diet and strength training can definitely help. But to really get rid of bat wings and firm and shape upper arms, you need to incorporate non-surgical body contouring technology. Though there are several technologies that aid in improving the condition (which we’ll discuss in future articles), our focus in this article is on the two heavy hitters: the gold standard for skin tightening, radiofrequency (RF)…and for those women with unwanted arm fat who are in need of fat reduction, ultrasound fat cavitation.
- We’re Shannon and Kay, faculty of the Body Contouring Academy.
- Throughout our twenty years of owning and operating medical spas, upper arms have been at the top of the list of problem areas…second only to the abdomen.
- We’ve helped hundreds of women get rid of bat wings as patients in our med spas.
- And we’ve helped many other women get rid of bat wings as patients who follow our at home treatment plans.
- So…whether you’re a professional or a DIY’er, this article provides the information you need to banish flabby upper arms…and get rid of bat wings forever!

How Aging and Menopausal Changes produce flabby upper arms
Changes in body shape, tone and size around age 40
- In our med spas, women aged forty and up have come to us for help conveying the same story: their bodies are changing and they don’t understand it because they are eating and exercising as always.
- What’s going on?
- For women in this age group, it’s likely the transition into the menopausal process coupled with the normal aging process.
- And though there are numerous changes associated with the aging and menopausal process (hot flashes, trouble sleeping, wrinkles, etc.), the most troubling seem to be the changes in body shape, tone and size.
- Though the belly concern remains number one, it is followed closely by flabby upper arms.
The biological shift in a woman’s natural fat distribution at menopause
- The changes in a menopausal woman’s body shape are due to biology.
- Decreasing hormones, muscle mass decline, poor sleep and slowed metabolism all contribute.
- But it’s the declining levels of estrogen and progesterone that play the biggest role in fat distribution.
- Lower estrogen and progesterone prompt the body to stop sending excess fat to the hips, thighs and buttocks and instead direct fat deposits to the abdomen, and in some women, also to the upper arms.
The loss of skin elasticity during the menopause process
- Another metabolic change caused by declining estrogen and progesterone levels is a loss of skin elasticity.
- As estrogen levels decline during menopause, so do the levels of collagen and elastin.
- This results in a loss of skin elasticity leading to sagging, wrinkling, and skin thinning.
Upper arm fat gain -or- upper arm fat loss (based on genetics)
- During the aging and menopause process, women may gain additional upper arm fat or they may lose upper arm arm fat (leading to an exaggerated hanging appearance) …as determined by their genetics.
- It all comes back to declining hormone levels; both scenarios present problems.
- Those women who gain fat want to lose it.
- The women who lose fat are left with depleted volume in their upper arms, compounding the flabby appearance.
II.
How Radiofrequency (RF) technology tightens flabby upper arms
Due to the declining production of collagen and elastin, skin laxity is the root cause of the appearance of bat wings.
Our remedy?
Radiofrequency (RF) technology - the gold standard for the treatment of loose skin.
What is Radiofrequency (RF) Skin Tightening?
- Radiofrequency (RF) technology utilizes wavelengths of heat energy to produce a specific measure of heating to the skin.
- When applied to the skin, this controlled heating prompts the body to produce new and improved collagen and elastin cells.
- Radiofrequency (RF) technology is renowned for its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production and tighten the skin, markedly improving the appearance of sagging upper arms.
How to use Radiofrequency (RF) technology to firm saggy upper arms and get rid of bat wings
- Depending on the severity of upper arm skin laxity, start with a series of 8 to 10 treatments.
- Perform once weekly -or- 2 times per week.
- If 2 times per week, the treatments should not be spaced closer than 72 hours apart.
- Each treatment yields subtle improvement and builds upon the progress from the previous treatment.
- It’s safe to continue treating until you have achieved desired results. It’s also okay to stop and restart treatments at a later date.
- After completing your series, retreat every 3 months or as needed. (You’ll need to continue stimulating the production of collagen and elastin).
PRO TIP: For those women who do not have excess upper arm fat, a Radiofrequency (RF) Skin Tightening protocol is all you need. In the next section, you’ll learn how combining RF with Ultrasound Fat Cavitation produces amazing results for women suffering from both flaccid upper arm skin and excess upper arm fat.

How Ultrasound Fat Cavitation reduces upper arm fat
You’ve learned that declining hormone levels during menopause compounded by the aging process lead to alterations in metabolism, one of which is redistributing fat deposits.
For some women, fat is deployed to the upper arms.
Our remedy?
Ultrasound Fat Cavitation - the non-invasive fat reduction technology that is perfectly suited to get rid of unwanted fat in the upper arms.
What is Ultrasound Fat Cavitation?
- Ultrasound Fat Cavitation, also referred to as ultrasonic cavitation or fat cavitation, is a non-invasive technology that uses high-frequency ultrasound waves to target and destroy unwanted fat cells.
- It's often referred to as the non-surgical alternative to liposuction.
How to use Ultrasound Fat Cavitation to get rid of bat wings
PRO TIP: Skin tightening using Radiofrequency (RF) is included as a component of a cavitation treatment protocol. That’s why the Ultrasound Fat Cavitation treatment protocol is great for those women who suffer from bat wings which are made up of loose upper arm skin and excess upper arm fat.
- Start with a series of 8 to 10 treatments (based upon the severity of the condition),
- Treat 1-2 times/week.
- If treating 2 times a week, treatments must be spaced greater than 72 hours apart.
- Each treatment yields subtle improvement in both fat reduction and skin firming, and builds upon the progress from the previous treatment.
- It’s safe to continue treating until you have achieved desired results. It’s also okay to stop and restart treatments at a later date.
- After completing your series, retreat every 3 months or as needed. (You’ll need to continue stimulating the production of collagen and elastin and eliminating fat cells directed to the area).
