What is compression therapy?

Compression therapy is the act of putting controlled pressure (a gentle squeezing) on the body for the purpose of improving blood flow and/or reducing swelling.

There are three types of compression therapy.

  1. Compression stockings or socks - most commonly applied from feet to knees or from feet to thighs.
  2. Bandages and wraps - elastic bandages or wraps typically applied in multiple layers.
  3. Pneumatic compression devices - computer-controlled machines that utilize inflatable sleeves that intermittently inflate and deflate.

In this article, our focus is on pneumatic (intermittent) compression devices.

Pneumatic (intermittent) compression devices are superior to stockings, socks and wraps because their intermittent, controlled pressure mimics the body’s natural muscle pumping action.

So…let’s take a closer look at pneumatic (intermittent) compression therapy.

How does pneumatic (intermittent) compression therapy work?

  • Pneumatic Compression therapy is administered by a computer-controlled compression machine that utilizes inflating pumps to put intermittent squeezing pressure (that’s followed by release of the pressure) on the targeted part of the body, usually the legs.
  • The automatic squeezing and release (inflating and deflating) stimulates blood flow and lymphatic drainage.

What are the wellness benefits of compression therapy?

Compression therapy enhances overall wellness via improved circulation

  • Compression therapy increases circulation, both blood and lymphatic, so it helps to improve any condition that would benefit from blood flow and/or enhanced lymphatic drainage.
  • How?
  • The increased blood flow and the improved lymphatic performance produced by compression therapy delivers a wide range of benefits.
