First up…stretch marks

We know them when we see them, right?  But the question is

What are stretch marks and what causes them?

Stretch marks (medical term, striae) are a type of scar that develops when 

Skin is stretched too quickly (faster than it can stretch without tearing)

            OR 

Shrinks too rapidly (faster than it can grow new collagen to repair the damage).

You can see that 

Stretch marks are a result of skin cell damage

Collagen provides support and strength for the skin.

Elastin provides the ability for skin to stretch.

We already said, you know them when you see them…but they can have differing appearances.

What do stretch marks look like?

Stretch marks are irregular line shaped scars; they change appearance as they age,

Newer stretch marks

Depending on the skin color, new stretch marks first appear red, purple or bluish in color.  

In most cases, newer stretch marks are raised, ‘angry-looking’ and inflamed.

Older stretch marks

After several weeks - and oftentimes up to several months or longer, stretch marks lighten in color and become less inflamed, taking on a ‘shriveled’ or ‘wrinkled’ appearance.

They can also appear ‘shiny.’

Stretch marks fade, but will not go away.

How common are stretch marks and who do they affect?

Stretch marks are very common.  Here are some stats.  Listen carefully.

It’s estimated that as many as 90% of women develop stretch marks at some point in their life.  40% of men report having stretch marks. 

86% of adolescents develop stretch marks with the body changes caused by puberty.

88% of women develop stretch marks with pregnancies.

43% of both men and women develop stretch marks with weight gain or weight loss.

That’s a huge portion of the population, right?

And there are some groups that tend to be more affected.

Those who are most likely to develop stretch marks are those who fall within the categories quoted above.

Pregnant women (higher incidence in Black, Hispanic or Asian skin)

Anyone who gains or loses weight rapidly

Bodybuilders

Adolescents going through fast periods of growth and development

Family history of stretch marks 

What areas of the body are most commonly affected by stretch marks?

Abdomen

Breasts

Thighs

Hips

Arms

Back (mostly men)
